The Case For Decarbonising Heavy Industry

Decarbonising hard-to-abate industrial sectors is crucial for achieving global climate goals.

These sectors are substantial GHG emitters and account for approximately one-quarter of the world’s energy consumption and around one-fifth of total CO2 emissions. They are harder to decarbonise due to their physical, technological or market characteristics. Reducing emissions from these industries is essential to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.

It will require a combination of approaches, including technological innovation, supportive policies, and collaboration between governments and the private sector

Current investment from industry is falling behind the rate of change required to meet global emission targets for 2030, let alone 2050.

Immediate action is required if we are to make a positive change in industry understanding, confidence and investability in decarbonisation technologies in time for 2030.
